Faculty of Education
Section 1: Preface

1.1 History
While teacher education in the Province of Manitoba dates to 1882, it was in 1935 that the Faculty of Education was created to offer programs leading to secondary school teaching certificates and to Master of Education degrees. In 1965, the elementary school certification program and staff of the Manitoba Teachers' College were integrated into the University of Manitoba.

Certification programs then were one-year duration available to students entering from high school or following first degrees. In 1986, the Manitoba Department of Education made the four year Bachelor of Education degree the basis for teacher certification. In the fall of 1997, the Minister of Education and Training announced that, as of September 1998, all future teachers must graduate from 150 credit hour teacher education programs and have two degrees. The faculty has, therefore, introduced a two year Bachelor of Education to be taken following the successful completion of an initial degree taken in another faculty or university.
