Section 2: Registration and Fees
2.1 Regular Session
2.1.1 General Information
2.1.2 University Health Standards
2.1.1 General Information
Registration is conducted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies beginning approximately mid-July for the September start of the regular academic session. Consult the publication Registration Guide for further details on this and other program start dates.
Registration material and information is made available to each student registered in the preceding session and mailed to all applicants granted admission. Others wishing details on registration for next session should write to: The Student Records Office, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2; telephone (204) 474 9428; email student_records@umanitoba.ca.
Undergraduate students are not allowed to register in graduate courses; that is, admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies is a condition for registration in courses at the 600 level and above.
All graduate students must initially register in the term specified in their letter of acceptance as specified in the Academic Schedule of this Calendar. In exceptional circumstances a student may defer registration for up to one term following acceptance into the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Any student not registering within one term of acceptance will be required to re-apply for admission.
The registration form lists all courses to be taken during the current year. All programs must be approved by the head of the major department or delegate. Approval to take courses from departments outside the major department must be obtained from the outside department.
Course Classifications
General Classifications
All courses for which a student registers must be classified in the space provided on the registration and course change forms, as follows:
M
Major course
AX
Auxiliary course
AU
Audit course
OS
Occasional status

VS

Visiting students
Auxiliary Courses
Extra courses which are not actually part of the graduate degree program but which are specified and required by the student's advisor, may be classified as AX (auxiliary) so as not to be included in the student's Grade Point Average.
NOTE:
Changes in course classification are regarded as course/program changes and may not be made without approval or after the deadline dates for course changes as indicated in the Academic Schedule of this Calendar.
Additional Courses
Graduate students in a program of study may take additional courses which are not part of the degree requirements, and will not be included in the grade point average and shall be classified as occasional (OS). Fees will be assessed on an individual course basis.
Continuing Courses
For those graduate level courses (600, 700, and 800) which are being taken by students enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and which continue beyond the normal academic term, the instructor shall recommend that a mark classification of "CO" be used until such time as a final grade can be established. If the course is not completed by the next September and the students intend completing the courses, they must re-register for the courses. The "CO" classification is also used in certain specialized undergraduate programs (e.g., science special pre-medical program). A "CO" classification for a given course may not be carried for longer than one calendar year.
Incomplete Courses
The student who is unable to complete the term work prescribed in a course may apply to the instructor prior to the end of the course for consideration of a grade classification of "Incomplete." It is understood that the student is to write the final examination if one is scheduled for the course.
Taking into account the results of the final examination, the value of the term work completed, and the extent of the incomplete term work, the instructor shall calculate the temporary grade, using a zero value for incomplete work.
The following maximum extensions are allowed:
For courses terminated in April:
August 1
For courses terminated in August:
December 1
For courses terminated in December:
April 1
If a final grade is not reported within one month of the extension deadline, the letter "I" will be dropped and the grade will remain as awarded. The student will no longer have an opportunity to improve the grade. In no case will the satisfaction of the incomplete requirements result in a lower grade being awarded.
Reregistration
Any student whose program of study extends over more than one year must re-register in September (refer to the Academic Schedule of this Calendar for registration and fee payment deadlines) of each succeeding year of his/her program until a degree is obtained.
If a student fails to re-register, he/she will not retain the status of a graduate student and must apply for re-admission to continue studies at a later date. (This re-registration requirement does not apply to pre-Master's or occasional students.)
NOTE: The notation "student discontinued program" will be placed on the academic record of any graduate student who has failed to maintain continuous registration.
Registration Revisions
For a designated period subsequent to registration in September and January, approved revisions and transfers may be made.
For dates and deadlines, consult the Academic Schedule of this Calendar.
Withdrawal From Courses
Graduate students are not allowed to withdraw from courses without written permission from their department head on recommendation from their advisor/advisory committee approving the program change. Consult the Academic Schedule of this Calendar for deadline dates for approved voluntary withdrawals. Other policies related to number of approved voluntary withdrawals etc., are stated in the supplementary regulations of each program of study. The notation "student discontinued program" will be placed on the academic record of any graduate student who has withdrawn from courses without such approval.
