Professor Fikret Berkes, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Community-Based Resource Management, has established the Berkes Graduate Scholarship in Community-Based Research. This annually funded scholarship will provide support towards degree-related field research and related expenses (including travel, food, housing, and to return research findings to the research host community); an opportunity to train in methods for community-based research, including community-based resource and environmental management, conservation and planning; and an opportunity to engage in outreach training, and to translate results into communication to communities, public audiences, and policy-makers through written, visual, oral and/or multimedia means.
A scholarship valued at $10,000 will be offered to a graduate student who:
- is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba in a Masters or PhD program;
- is pursuing studies in community-based research methods including, but not limited to, community-based resource and environmental management, conservation and planning;
- has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) on the last 60 credit hours of courses (graduate and undergraduate);
- does not already hold a UMGF, SSHRC or other major award greater than $15,000.
*Approved research areas are: community-based resource (or environmental) management; community-based planning for green options (e.g. solar energy); community-based conservation; Indigenous-led conservation and/or biocultural restoration; Indigenous reconciliation through conservation partnerships (e.g. environmental guardians); land use, food security and gender in northern Indigenous communities; and Indigenous knowledge and science (e.g. reconciling ways of knowing).

In recognition of the growing importance of good governance to all Canadian institutions, the Canadian Foundation for Governance Research is offering annual Bertram Scholarships of $15,000 to PhD students registered at Canadian universities. The scholarship will support the work of students who are conducting research into organizational governance as part of their doctoral research project.
To qualify for a Bertram Scholarship, you must be a full-time student registered at a recognized Canadian university in September 2019. You must be a senior doctoral student undertaking studies that include significant original, autonomous research that leads to the completion of a dissertation or major scholarly publication. You must not have exceeded the allowable number of years already spent in doctoral study, as set out by your university. You must not have previously been awarded a Robert Bertram Doctoral Research Award or Bertram Scholarship.
To qualify for the scholarship, the doctoral research project should focus on a topic directly related to organizational governance, including for example:
The importance of effective boards in enabling good decision-making and improved functioning of Canadian institutions;
Governance issues of interest to Canadian boards of public, private, government-agency and not-for-profit organizations;
The role of corporate governance in enabling positive societal impacts;
Governance best practices through the Canadian perspective.
The following are examples of relevant topics, although by no means an exhaustive list:
Diversity beyond gender
Long-termism/sustainability
Ethics/codes of conduct/conflict of interest
Oversight of corporate culture
Cybersecurity/ IT governance
The board’s role in innovation

The R.H. Betts Graduate Fellowship ahs been established to honour Dr. Robert Holladay Betts and to support graduate work in Chemistry. Dr. Betts ia a significant contributor to this fund, as are his friends and colleaques. Dr. Betts began his scientific career at Atomic Energy of Canada in Chaulk River, Ontario. Dr. Betts went on the be the Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Manitoba and a member of the Board of Governors. Dr. Betts retired from the University of Manitoba in 1980.
This award has been established to foster graduate study in Chemistry and to support exceptional graduate students in the Department of Chemistry. The fund will provide awards, the number and value of which will be determined by the selection committee each year, will be offered to students who:
are registered as full-time students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry;
have demonstrated exceptional research ability at either the undergraduate level or graduate level;
have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) over (i) the last two regular academic sessions completed for students in their first two years of graduate studies and (ii) all graduate level sessions for students beyond the first two years of graduate studies.
Research ability may be determined by research publications or presentations at local, national, or international scientific conferences. BOCK, ERNST & INGRID - GRADUATE AWARD

The Ernst and Ingrid Bock Graduate Award fund has been established at The University of Manitoba as a memorial through donations made by colleagues, friends and family of the Bocks who died in 1994. The Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative and the Edward Eric Hildebrand and Anne Palmer Hildebrand Memorial Scholarship Fund have made contributions to this fund. Ernst Bock was born in Kharkov, Ukraine in 1929 and, after several years in Germany, immigrated to Canada in 1948. He obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Manitoba and joined the Chemistry Department as a lecturer in 1958. He was promoted to Professor in 1972, a position he held until his death in 1994. He published approximately 90 scientific papers, mainly in the area of dipole moments, magnetic resonance, and liquid crystals. Ingrid (Schroeder) Bock was born in 1938 in Winnipeg. She received a B.A. from the University of Manitoba in 1959 and taught French at the University of Winnipeg Collegiate Division for four years. Her employment at the University of Manitoba started in 1980 and she was an Administrative Assistant in the Department of Physics at the time of her death in 1994.
The purpose of this memorial award is to support exceptional graduate students in the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The fund will be split equally to provide for awards in Chemistry and in Physics and Astronomy. The fund will be offered to students in each department who:
are registered full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in either the Department of Chemistry or the Department of Physics and Astronomy;
have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) over (i) the last two regular academic sessions completed, if they are students who are in their first two years of graduate studies or (ii) all graduate level sessions, if they are students who are beyond the first two years of graduate studies;

Colleagues and board members of the Research and Education for Solutions to Violence and Abuse (RESOLVE) Research Network have acknowledged Carolynne Boivin's contribution to the development of their network through the establishment of a fund at the University of Manitoba. Each year, the available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one or more scholarships valued at a minimum of $4,000 each to graduate students who: - 1. are enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba;
- 2. have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.0 based on the last 60 credit hours (or equivalent) of study; and
- 3. are conducting research in the area of family or gender-based violence.
In any given year, at least one of the scholarships will be awarded with first preference going to a student who has self-declared as a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit from Canada, and second preference to a student who is conducting Indigenous-focused research. |

The Community Therapy Services (CTS) Inc. Board of Directors offers an annual scholarship at the University of Manitoba in the School of Medical Rehabilitation in honour of Dr. Ron Bowie, former member and Chairperson of the CTS Board of Directors and former Director of the School of Medical Rehabilitation. CTS is a private not for profit agency that provides rehabilitation (occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech language pathology) services in Manitoba. The agency employs skilled professionals who provide treatment, consultation, and education to clients and care givers in community, long-term care, ambulatory care and acute care settings. The agency delivers services in partnership with numerous organizations in Manitoba both internal and external to the health sector.
Each year, two scholarships, will be offered; one to a graduate student in the Physical Therapy program and one to a graduate student in the Occupational Therapy program who:
(1) is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in either the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program or the Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program offered by the School of Medical Rehabilitation at the University of Manitoba;
(2) has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5;
(3) enrolls in the second and final year of study in the School of Medical Rehabilitation in either the MOT or the MPT program;
(4) demonstrates an interest in community practice, by way of an application outlining his/her experiences in or future goals for community practice.

Through the generosity of Messrs. Allan, Edward, and Peter Bronfman, a fund in support of the Allan Bronfman Family Bursaries was established at the University of Manitoba ca. 1970.
The bursary in Law is valued at one-third of the available annual interest.
The bursary in law shall be awarded to a student who has successfully met with high standing the admission requirements for the Faculty of Law of The University of Manitoba and who, after being accepted by the selection committee for said faculty, registers as a full-time student in the next ensuing academic year for the first year law program of studies.
In selecting the recipient of this bursary, the selection committee for the award shall take into consideration the financial resources and circumstances of the applicants. If for any reason the recipient of the bursary does not register as required, the bursary shall be awarded by reversion to the next qualified candidate. |
