Eligibility	As a means of promoting the use of Statistics Canada datasets in graduate student research projects and encouraging the funding of graduate students, the Manitoba RDC is offering grants for Masters and PhD Students who plan to undertake a new project. The Manitoba RDC offers researchers in Manitoba free access to Statistics Canada datasets, as well as the workspace, professional and technical support and equipment needed to analyze these data. Eligibility	In memory of A.G. Robinson, Professor (1953-1981), and Professor Emeritus (1982-1992) of the Department of Entomology, his colleagues and friends have established a scholarship fund at The University of Manitoba. The Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative has made a contribution to this fund. From this fund, an annual scholarship, valued at the available annual interest earned (initially $200) will be made, effective 1994, to a graduate student who: is enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, in a graduate degree program delivered by the Department of Entomology has achieved strong academic standing in the overall program (a minimum AGPA on 3.5 in their current program) has not previously received the award in his or her current program; among those candidates who meet criteria (1) through (3), has written the best literature review essay in one of the required courses ENTM 7150 (MSc students) or ENTM 7220 (PhD students). The award selection process for this scholarship will occur in January. The committee of course instructors and the Chair of the Entomology graduate program will review thesis literature review essays submitted udring the previous year (January 1 through December 31). If no student is considered qualified for the scholarship, all of the interest will be returned to the principal.

Eligibility	A Masters Level Scholarship has been created by a bequest from Harold R. Abells. This scholarship shall be awarded each academic year. The annual value of the award shall be the available annual interest* generated by the fund. The scholarship shall be awarded to a deserving M.A. student enrolled in the Philosophy M.A. program, in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba who, in the majority opinion of the members of the selection committee, is making excellent progress. The scholarship will be open to men and women regardless of race, national origin, and creed, in keeping with the laws of the land. The scholarship shall be open to full-time continuing students in the Philosophy M.A. program in the Faculty of Graduate Studies who have awards GPAs of no less than 3.5. Applicants may be pursuing the degree through either the thesis or comprehensive route. If, in any year, in the majority opinion of the members of the selection committee, there is no deserving student who is making excellent progress, then the committee may hold over the award until the following year. The award should not be held over a second time except by unanimous approval of the selection committee.

Eligibility	One scholarship is offered annually to an applicant who has graduated from The University of Manitoba or from one of its affiliated colleges and who will be pursuing a Master's or Doctoral program. The scholarship is renewable for one additional year following the successful completion of the recipient's first year of graduate studies. The purpose of the fund is to reward the academic achievements of students who have completed an undergraduate degree from the University of Manitoba and have chosen to pursue graduate studies outside of the University of Manitoba. Each year, half of the available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one scholarship to the individual who: (1) has graduated from any undergraduate program offered within the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba within the past five years at the time of the application's submission; (2) has achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 based on the last 60 credit hours of completed university-level study (or equivalent); (3) has been accepted to, and intends to pursue studies within the next twelve months in any graduate program which leads to a Master's or Doctoral degree that is one year or more in duration at an accredited university in Europe, the United States of America, or Canada (not including the University of Manitoba or any of its affiliated colleges); (4) has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills, and involvement in extra-curricular activities throughout the duration of their undergraduate degree. In the event that two or more applicants are equally qualified for the scholarship, preference in selection will be given to the applicant who has taken courses in Philosophy, Psychology, and/or History, or will be pursuing graduate studies in one or more of these subjects. This portion of the scholarship will be provided to the new recipient in the form of a mailed cheque once the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba receives official confirmation that the recipient has registered at the post-secondary institution at which they will be pursuing graduate studies. In the event that the selected new recipient does not register for the graduate program as indicated in their initial application, the scholarship will be provided to the next qualified candidate in order of merit, if any. In the event that there are no successful applicants in any given year, the portion of the income from the fund dedicated to the new recipient will be returned to the capital of the fund.

Eligibility	In memory of John Allen Knowles (B.Sc./60, Civil Engineering), his family, together with UMA Group Ltd., has established a fund at The University of Manitoba to recognize and encourage students in the academic discipline of water resources in the Faculty of Engineering. Mr. Knowles, who went on to obtain a Masters degree at the University of Alberta (M.Sc./62) after completing his undergraduate degree at The University of Manitoba, worked with UMA Group Ltd. from 1974 to 1994 and served as its Director of Water Resources from 1976 to 1993. He was also Director of the International Division of UMA from 1983 and served as Vice President, International, from 1992 to 1994. This award is to be given to a student in his/her first year of the Master’s program in water resources in the Department of Civil Engineering. The award shall be given to a student who: has an excellent undergraduate academic record (minimum 3.50 grade point average on the last 60 credit hours); has demonstrated excellence in water resources subjects at the undergraduate level; and, has declared an interest in pursuing a career in the water resources field.

Eligibility	Dr. William Alexander Allen CBE, known throughout the architectural world as Bill, received an Isbister Scholarship as a student at the University of Manitoba. On graduation in 1936, he was awarded the University’s Gold Medal in Architecture. Bill was appointed Deputy Head of the Physics Division and later Chief Architect and Head of Design Research for the UK Governments' Building Research Station (now Establishment) in 1945. In 1946 he was jointly responsible for initiating the British Acoustical Society, later to become the Institute of Acoustics, and in 1949 he led the BRE group consulting for the acoustical design of the Royal Festival Hall. In 1954 he was elected to the Council of the Royal Institute of British Architects on which he served with one short gap until 1988. In 1961 he was invited to become Principal of the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. Concurrently he joined forces with a friend to set up an architectural practice, Bickerdike Allen Partners, eventually practising widely as architects and consultants in the technologies of architecture. In 1962 he received the University of Manitoba Alumni Jubilee award and in 1977 an Honorary Doctorate of laws. The New Zealand Institute of Architects made him an Honorary Associate in 1965 and the American Institute of Architects followed with Honorary Fellowship in 1983. He became a Commander in the Order of Merit of Portugal in 1972, and in 1980 Commander in the Order of the British Empire. He published numerous papers on architecture and building technology, and in 1997 published Envelope Design for Buildings. Family and friends of Bill Allen have established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba in his honour. This fund has been established with two objectives in mind: to provide students of Architecture at the University of Manitoba with the freedom to explore architecture or architectural practice anywhere in the world; and to provide recognition and support to exceptional graduate students in the Department of Architecture at the University of Manitoba who are conducting research into areas of lighting, acoustics, or the causes of building defects and what can be done to avoid such defects. The available annual income will support two awards, a travel scholarship and a research scholarship, each of equal value. Each scholarship will be offered to a graduate student who: is enrolled full-time in the graduate program in the Department of Architecture at the University; has completed one graduate studio and at least 6 credit hours of 700 level core courses with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5; has demonstrated excellence and significant growth in the completion of the graduate design studios with particular emphasis on the comprehensiveness of the design process; has demonstrated a particular research interest in the building sciences. Travel Scholarship In order to compete for the travel scholarship, eligible students will be required to submit a multi-part application. The application shall include a portfolio of the applicant’s work, a 1,000 word proposal stating the theme and the scope of the proposed research topic, a time-line of how the study will proceed and two letters of reference, one an academic reference and the second a character reference (cannot be submitted by a family member). This scholarship will provide support for, among other things, travel and accommodation expenses involved in the research which the recipient undertakes. Travel must commence within 10 months of receipt of the award. Research Scholarship The research conducted shall be related to environmental controls: lighting, acoustics, integrated building systems, or the causes of building defects and measures which can be used to avoid them. In order to compete for the research scholarship, eligible students will be required to submit a multi-part application. The application shall include a portfolio of the applicant’s work, a 1,000 word proposal stating the theme and the scope of the proposed research topic, a time-line of how the study will proceed and two letters of reference, one an academic reference and the second a character reference (cannot be submitted by a family member). This scholarship will provide support for expenses involved in the research which the recipient undertakes. If in any given year, if one of these scholarships is not offered due to unavailability of eligible candidates, the award amount will be capatilized with the principal of the fund. Two scholarships may be offered in one category if eligible candidates for only one of the two categories are found. If a recipient does not register or proceed as required, the scholarship may then be offered to the next eligible candidate.
