Eligibility The R.H. Betts Graduate Fellowship ahs been established to honour Dr. Robert Holladay Betts and to support graduate work in Chemistry. Dr. Betts ia a significant contributor to this fund, as are his friends and colleaques. Dr. Betts began his scientific career at Atomic Energy of Canada in Chaulk River, Ontario. Dr. Betts went on the be the Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Manitoba and a member of the Board of Governors. Dr. Betts retired from the University of Manitoba in 1980.
This award has been established to foster graduate study in Chemistry and to support exceptional graduate students in the Department of Chemistry. The fund will provide awards, the number and value of which will be determined by the selection committee each year, will be offered to students who:
  • are registered as full-time students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry;
  • have demonstrated exceptional research ability at either the undergraduate level or graduate level;
  • have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) over (i) the last two regular academic sessions completed for students in their first two years of graduate studies and (ii) all graduate level sessions for students beyond the first two years of graduate studies.

  • Research ability may be determined by research publications or presentations at local, national, or international scientific conferences. Chemistry students in the first year of graduate studies will be evaluated based on CHEM 4710 - Research Project in Chemistry or Biochemistry or an equivalent course.
    The award is renewable, but previous recipients must re-apply each year to be considered and will be in equal competition with other camdidates.
