Eligibility The Dafoe Foundation was established by friends and admirers of John Wesley Dafoe, Editor of the Winnipeg Free Press from 1901 until his death in 1944. He was Canada's most distinguished journalist and editor with a special interest in Canada's place in the world. The purpose of the fellowship is to support scholarship and research on any issue in the field of international relations and/or international comparative studies.

Each year, one fellowship, valued at $10,000, will be offered to a graduate student who:

  • is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies entering the first or second year of a Master's program in the any of the following: the Departments of Economics, History Political Studies, the Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice, or the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba;
  • has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent in the previous 60 credit hours of study;
  • is pursuing a thesis stream related to the field of international relations and/or international comparative studies.

Recipients may hold the J.W. Dafoe Fellowship in International Relations concurrently with the other awards, consistent with the policies of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
The Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (or designate) will ask the Honourary Secretary of the J.W. Dafoe Foundation (or designate) to name the selection committee for this award.

Tenable at Tenable at the University of Manitoba for full-time FGPS Master's students in the first or second year registered in the 2025-2026 academic year, in the Departments of Political Studies, Economics, History, Arthur V. Mauro Institute for Peace & Justice, or the Faculty of Law.
UM Graduate students must be registered in both Fall 2025 & Winter 2026 terms to be eligible for this award.

Applicants are required to submit an online application. The application includes a cover letter, detailed research proposal, three (3) letters of reference and transcripts.

Cover letter can be addressed to J.W. Dafoe Graduate Fellowship for Study in International Relations Award Selection Committee. No format, spacing or page limit specifications.

Referees will receive an email requesting they submit their confidential recommendation through the online application portal. Applicants are responsible for ensuring references and required documentation material are submitted by the application deadline.
