Eligibility |
The intent of this fellowship is to support graduate student
research at the International Institute for Sustainable Development-Experimental Lakes Area
(IISD-ELA) in Northwestern Ontario. In order for students to be considered for the award, they must
demonstrate that a large part of their proposed research is to be centred at the IISD-ELA.
Each year, the available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one or more fellowships to a
graduate student who:
(1) is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in any Master’s or doctoral program
offered at the University of Manitoba;
(2) has achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the previous 60
credit hours of study;
(3) has been accepted to conduct research at the IISD-ELA;
(4) has demonstrated exceptional research ability, as determined by the selection committee.

Application Details |
To support criterion (4) candidates are required to provide the following application materials:
(i) a curriculum vitae;
(ii) two academic letters of reference in support of their application;
(iii) a list of all fellowships and external support currently being received or applied for by the
applicant;
(iv) a one to three page summary of the proposed research.
The summary of the proposed research
should include:
(a) name and address of the applicant and the applicant's academic supervisor; (b) degree sought;
(c) the objectives, design, and methods to be used in the research conducted by the applicant; (d)
a summary of the relevance of the proposed research for society;
(e) a summary of why the proposed research should be undertaken at IISD-ELA (as opposed to
somewhere else);
(f) a brief budget justification, including requests for per diem (these costs are set annually by
the
International Institute for Sustainable Development);
Previous recipients are encouraged to apply. In addition to the required application materials
provided in the previous year, past recipients must also provide a brief summary (maximum 250
words) describing the benefits of having received the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area Graduate
Fellowship in the past along
with an updated budget justification. This must be accompanied by a letter of support from the
applicant’s
academic advisor.
