Eligibility The Burt and Nan Galaway Scholarship Fund has been established to provide tuition scholarships to graduate students pursuing Master of Social Work degrees at the Faculty of Social Work. The award will be called the Burt and Nan Galaway Scholarship.
Interest from the fund is used to provide tuition scholarships. If funds from interest are available, a full tuition scholarship is awarded annually; if insufficient interest funds are available for a full tuition scholarship, a partial tuition scholarship is awarded annually. If available interest exceeds that needed for a full tuition scholarship, a full plus a partial tuition scholarship will be awarded. Full tuition scholarships are awarded whenever funding is sufficient for this purpose.
Scholarships are awarded to full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Social Work who are pursuing M.S.W. degrees early in their professional careers. For the purposes of this scholarship, full-time graduate students must meet both conditions "a" and "b" below:
  • Eligible students must be pursuing a planned course of study which, if successfully completed, will result in the awarding of the M.S.W. degree within 24 months after the first registration for students admitted to the M.S.W. program. Students admitted to the Pre-M.S.W. program must be pursuing a planned course of study which, if successfully completed, will result in the conferring of the M.S.W. degree within 36 months after the first registration.
  • Eligible students may not be employed in any salaried or consultative capacity other than as a student in University of Manitoba employment; this provision shall also extend to managing of a private business or private practice.

  • "Early in one's professional career" means students must begin graduate studies within 24 months of completion of their first baccalaureate degree. Preference shall be given to persons who move directly from a baccalaureate program into graduate work and of these preference shall be given to persons who are admitted to the Pre-M.S.W. program.
The scholarship may be renewed once for persons who have been admitted directly to the M.S.W. program and twice for persons who have been admitted to the Pre-M.S.W. program, providing the student remains in good academic standing. Good academic standing, for purposes of this scholarship, means that the student has completed all courses for which he or she registered with a grade acceptable to the University of Manitoba for a graduate student, has maintained a grade point average acceptable to the University of Manitoba for awarding a graduate degree, and has completed at least one half of the credits necessary for an M.S.W. degree if the student has been admitted directly into the M.S.W. program, or has completed at least one third (after year 1) or two thirds (after year 2) of the credits required for an M.S.W. degree if the student was admitted to the Pre-M.S.W. program. The scholarship shall be provided to all students who are eligible for renewal before scholarships are provided to other students.
