The Prowse Prize Fund was established in 1924 in recognition of the notable work of Dr. Samuel Willis Prowse, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Manitoba, for the advancement of medical education in the Province. The regulations governing the award of this prize are as follows: 1) The competition for this prize will be open to residents and fellows within the clinical departments of the Faculty of Medicine who hold the M.D. degree (or its equivalent) and who are doing clinically relevant research. Income available annually from the fund supporting this award is to be allocated for the award itself, for a grant to cover travel costs for the award winner, and for a lectureship, at the discretion of the Dean's designated administrator for Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Medicine. Up to 20 percent of the annual income may be allocated to cover the costs associated with the promotion of this award. 2) This award will be made by an appropriately constituted selection committee. The recipient is normally expected to receive the award in person as well as give a Faculty-wide lecture on his/her research (with any travel costs as noted above). 3) The award may be withheld at the discretion of the appropriately constituted selection committee. 4) All awards shall be based primarily on the excellence of research. 5) The selection committee will refer applications deemed not appropriate for the Prowse Prize to the Awards Committee for Major Research Awards for review in the same year's competition. The deadline for submissions to the Chair of the Awards Committee, Office of the Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies), Faculty of Medicine, shall be three months prior to the Annual Awards Day or as announced annually by the Faculty of Medicine Committee for Graduate Studies. Eligibility for the award will extend to a period of time not exceeding one year following the completion of the training period.
