Professor Marcel Edmond Jean Richard was for forty-two years a distinguished member of the Department of French at The University of Manitoba. In 1968, a fund was established at The University of Manitoba through the generosity of his family, friends and colleagues. After a large contribution from the estate of Isabel B. Richard to the fund, its capital balance now sits at just over $200,000. In addition to the MARCEL RICHARD GRADUATE AWARD, a $1000 undergraduate award is also offered from this fund (see MARCEL RICHARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP).
Each year, the number and value of fellowships shall be determined by the selection committee. The value of each fellowship shall not exceed the current value of the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship for Masters (if the student is a Masters student) or Ph.D student (if the student is a Ph.D. student). These fellowships will be offered annually to a student who:
has been admitted to pursue graduate studies in French at the University of Manitoba, either at the M.A. or Ph.D. level;
has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.60;
possesses an ability to do scholarly research at the graduate level.
In a year when no suitable candidate is found, no award will be made. In future years, when the available annual income permits, two awards may be made. |
