Kenneth G. Wersh, President of Agri-Feed Products and a grain farmer from the Marquette area in Manitoba died suddenly on January 4, 1994. In memory of K.G. Wersh, his wife Joanne and daughter Kerith established a fund (currently $25,000) with The University of Manitoba for the purpose of offering an annual graduate student fellowship in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. (This fund amount is to be matched from The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship Matching Funds Program.) The fellowship, in the amount of the available interest* generated annually, will be given as a “top-up” award to a student who:
(1) is a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident;
(2) is registered in the second year of an M.Sc. program or in the third year of a Ph.D. program in Agricultural and Food Sciences and has applied for a University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF);
(3) has achieved the highest grade point average in the previous year.
Preference will be given to a graduate student in Animal Science of rural Manitoba origin. In case of a tie, the cumulative graduate grade point average shall be considered as a tie-breaker.
If, in any year, no candidate eligible for the Kenneth G. Wersh Fellowship is successful in the UMGF competition, the fellowship may be offered as a “stand alone” award to the top ranked UMGF applicant, or to another student the selection committee considers a worthy recipient.
