Eligibility Mr. Robert A. Rodgers, along with a contribution from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, has established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba in support of graduate study in Education. Mr. Rodgers attended the University of Manitoba in the 1930s and 40s, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1939 and a Bachelor of Education degree in 1945. Both degrees were obtained completely through correspondence, evening, and summer session courses. Mr. Rodgers began his career as a teacher at the age of 18 in a small one-classroom schoolhouse in Broad Valley, Manitoba, in 1932, where he not only educated students in grades 1 through 9 in all subjects, but he was also the caretaker of the schoolhouse, its outlying facilities and the school grounds. He went on to earn a Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto in 1969, through correspondence. Mr. Rodgers also served as a life long member in the Canadian Army, giving of his time in Europe during the Second World War, becoming a Major in 1948, and taking a post as the Resident Staff Officer at the University of Manitoba from 1948 to 1950. He also worked for some time as a Chief Instructor at the Army base in Shilo, Manitoba. His teaching career culminated with a position as the principal of a public high school in Ontario, and he retired from the Army after 22 years of service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Rodgers shared his life and experiences with his wife Alice with whom he raised a family of three children.
A top-up scholarship shall be offered to the graduate student who:
  • is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba, pursuing a Master of Education degree;
  • has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average on all courses (undergraduate and graduate) of 3.5;
  • has been ranked as the top student in the Master of Education degree program to receive a University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship.

    Application Details Recipients of this award are chosen annually as part of the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship competition. There is no separate application process.
