Through a generous gift from Dr. James Burns, and a contribution from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, an endowment fund has been established at the University of Manitoba to support the study of history. This award has been established in the 125th anniversary year of the University of Manitoba. These awards shall be available beginning in
2003. Of the available annual income, $10,000 shall provide for an entrance fellowship for a student
who: (1) has been admitted to the first year of the PhD graduate program in the Department of History at The University of Manitoba; (2) has achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 over the equivalent of the last two completed years of study (minimum 12 credit hours in a graduate program). If there is no qualified candidate, then the fellowship may be awarded to a candidate in a
subsequent year of the PhD program. A fellowship valued at $6,000 shall be offered to a student who: (1) is a candidate for PhD in the graduate program in the Department of History at The University of Manitoba and has completed the comprehensive exam; (2) expects to complete the required dissertation for the PhD graduate program in the Department of History in the academic session in which this award is tenable; (3) has achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.50 based on a minimum 12 credit hours of completed doctoral course work. Two entrance fellowships valued at $8,000 each shall be offered to students who: (1) have been admitted to the first year of the Masters graduate program in the Department of History at The University of Manitoba; (2) have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 over the equivalent of the last two completed years of study (minimum 48 credit hours in the undergraduate program). A final amount of $3,000 shall be directed for such items as graduate student travel to archives and to provide matching funds for fellowships funded by other granting agencies. Preference will be given to: (1) full-time graduate students in good standing and enroled full-time in a Masters or PhD program in the Department of History.
The distribution of funds for student travel and top-up matching will be left to the discretion of
the selection committee. The selection committee shall be named by the Head of the Department of History. |
