The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers five Doctoral Distinguished Dissertation Awards to graduating students. Each year, one award will be offered in each of the following categories at the Doctoral level: applied sciences, health sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
In addition to receiving a cash prize, the recipients will each be presented with a Citation Certificate.
Eligible dissertations must have been defended and the final approved version submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies between January 1 and December 31 of the previous calendar year.NOTE: For the current competition only students who defended and submitted their doctoral dissertation during January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024, are eligible for this competition.
Each Faculty/School/College may nominate up to two Doctoral students to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. In case there are no qualified candidates in a given Faculty/School/College, the Faculty/School/College selection committee may choose not to submit a nominee. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will verify the eligibility of nominees submitted as follows:
- were enrolled full- or part-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in a Doctoral program in the year in which the award was tenable;
- have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 in their current graduate program; and
- have been nominated by the Faculty/College/School in which their department is housed, and have, in the opinion of the selection committee, submitted the best dissertation in their respective categories.

Each Faculty/College/School may submit two award nominations to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Contact your Faculty/College/School for their internal nomination deadline.
Each nomination package must include:
- the award category the nominee should be considered under: applied sciences, health sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences;
- a letter of support from the Dean of the Faculty/Director of the Faculty/College/School that also indicates the process used by the selection committee to select the nominee;
- a letter from the Graduate Chair of the student’s department describing the reasons for the nomination, and why the dissertation is viewed as a ground-breaking piece of original work;
- the name and departmental affiliation of the nominee’s research supervisor;
- a copy of each examiner’s pre-defense report;
- a copy of the abstract of the dissertation, not to exceed 350 words in length; and
- a current curriculum vitae for the nominee.
The Faculty/College/School must submit the entire nomination package as a single PDF document via email to:
