Eligibility	The Governor-General of Canada offers two annual gold medals called The Governor General’s Gold Medal to recognize the outstanding performance of graduate students. These awards are based on overall academic excellence. Eligibility for the medals is open to all students who will convocate with a Master’s or a Ph.D. at Spring Convocation or who graduated the previous Winter or Fall at the University of Manitoba. NOTE: For the current competition only Master's and Doctoral students who intend to convocate in May 2024, who convocated in February 2024, or convocated in October 2023 are eligible for this competition. One gold medal will be awarded to a Master’s student and one gold medal will be awarded to a Doctoral student.

Application Details	The 2023-2024 Application is Closed Each Faculty/School/College may nominate up to two Master’s and two Doctoral students for each of the Governor General’s Gold Medals, respectively. Nominations must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies on or before the deadline and are to include: (1)a letter from the Dean/Director of the Faculty/School/College giving a detailed rationale for the nomination; (2)the nominee’s curriculum vitae; (3)a copy of the nominee’s University of Manitoba transcript; (4)a brief, written statement by the nominee (500 words maximum) summarizing the significance of their accomplishments and knowledge gained during their graduate program (e.g., research and related accomplishments, knowledge acquired, etc.). (5)a letter of support from the advisor, unit head, or graduate chair; and, (6)a copy of the report from the external examiner for PhD students Nomination packages can be submitted in PDF format via email to: graduate.awards@umanitoba.ca Attention: Allison Aubin The selection committee will be named by the Vice-Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (or designate).The selection committee will include the Dean and Associate Dean(s) of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and three members of the Executive Committee representing areas of Natural Sciences and Engineering, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Medical and Health Sciences or designates. The Dean shall act as Chair. Please check with your faculty/unit if you are interested in being nominated for the award. The deadline for faculties and units to have their nominations to FGS is March 15, 2024, however the deadline by which a faculty/unit wants to have nominations submitted to them will most likely be earlier.
