Eligibility A fund has been established for the provision of a gold medal and prize in honour of William Lewis Morton, B.A., M.A., B. Litt., LL. D., D, F.R.S.C. who served on the staff of the University of Manitoba from1943-1966 as Assistant Professor, Association Professor, Professor, Head of the Department of History and Provost of University College, before accepting appointment elsewhere. Professor Morton, a native Manitoba was one of the most important historians of his generation in Canada.
The medal and prize will be awarded annually to the student who:
  • has successfully completed the requirements for the M.A. in History in either (a) the thesis or course/comprehensive stream, at the University of Manitoba or (b) the archival studies stream of the Joint Master's Program at either the University of Manitoba or the University of Winnipeg
  • has achieved a minimum degree point average of 3.75 in the graduate program
  • in the opinion of the examination committee, has passed the oral examination with distinction
    Candidates for the award will be nominated by their examiing committee who will submit a copy of the candidate's thesis or comprehensive examination scripts to the selection committee.
    The W.L. Morton Gold Medal and Prize in History may be held with the Gordon Dodds Award for Archival Studies.
