Eligibility There shall be annual field-specific awards, in each of the areas of cardiovascular biology, child health, neurobiology, cellular biology, infection and immunity, molecular biology and population-based research presented to doctoral students who have performed the best research in one of these areas. In addition, there shall be three major awards (two for PhD students and one for MSc students) which are not research specific.

All senior students in the respective programs who are registered at any time within the current academic year in a department within the Faculty of Medicine and students whose advisor is a member of the Faculty of Medicine and whose research project is part of a recognized program within the Faculty shall be eligible to apply. Students in the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology and Medical Physics shall not be excluded on the sole basis of department of registration.

There shall also be one major prize known as the E. L. Drewry Memorial Award presented for the best research overall. The recipient is normally expected to receive the award in person as well as to give a faculty-wide lecture on his/her research. The travel cost incurred by the recipient to present the lecture, should he or she have already left the university, will be reimbursed to a predetermined maximum.

Application Details All awards will be based primarily on the excellence of research.
Applicants will submit the following documents as a pdf file via e-mail to edwin.kroeger@med.umanitoba.ca:
  • cover letter summarizing his/her research accomplishments
  • abstract of thesis (if available)
  • thesis (if available). If a thesis is not available, a summary of research should be submitted.
  • reprints of publications (published or "in press"). Appplicants must state role in each publication listed.
  • curriculum vitae; should include education history, research training, honors and awards, list of publications (please identify review papers).
  • Digital photo suitable for use in the presentation of award. High resolution (0.5-1MB) preferred.
  • Applicants will also submit letters of support by applicant's advisor and any other individual(s) knowledgeable of the applicant's research. Letters should clearly outline the merits of the applicant's research and also briefly describe other merits of the student. Please provide one (original) letter in a sealed envelope and mail to the address listed below - do not submit letters electronically with your application.
  • The submission of documents for consideration by the Awards Committee shall be made by the student in consultation with the student's advisor. The submission shall be accompanied by an indication of the category in which the student wishes to compete and, if relevant, a justification of the category chosen.
  • Application by a student who has already received a major award shall be solely on the basis of new research conducted after the previous award.
