In 1986, an endowment fund was established by a generous gift from the late Mr. Martin Kavanaugh and
his estate to ensure a continuance of his interest in the importance of the great explorer, Pierre Gaultier
LaVerendrye and companions, to the development of Western North America and particularly of the West
and Prairies.
The objective of the fellowship is to promote research on and foster a greater knowledge of
the relationship between New France and the Canadian West, including aboriginal-European relations and
the fur trade.
The eligible graduate student must:
- be enroled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba;
- demonstrate an ability to use research materials in the French language;
- be a student of history, historical geography, demographics, economics, political studies
anthropology, sociology, linguistics, the Church in Western Canada, music, Native Peoples and
languages, cultural studies, or any other disciplines that might advance the objectives of the
fellowship as described.
The fellowship is renewable for a maximum of four years, but must be reapplied for each year. The
recipient(s) shall be expected to present an annual report on their year’s work. |
