Biomass Energy Institute established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba in 2007. Ian Roberston contributed an additional gift to the fund in 2024. The purpose of the fund is to reward the academic achievements of a master’s or doctoral student in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies who is conducting research related to renewable or alternative energy. Each year, beginning in 2025-2026, the available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one scholarship to a graduate student who:
(1) is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in any master’s or doctoral program;
(2) has achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 based on the last 60 credit hours (or equivalent) of study; and
(3) is conducting thesis research related to renewable or alternative energy.
In order to demonstrate how they meet criterion (3), candidates must submit an application to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies which includes the following materials:
(i.) a written statement (maximum 500 words) on how their thesis research is related to renewable or alternative energy; and
(ii.) a letter of support from their thesis advisor.
The Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (or designate) will name the selection committee for this award. |

| Application Details |
This agreement may be amended by the mutual consent of the donor (or designate) and the University of Manitoba. All such amendments shall be in writing. In the absence of the donor (or designate), and providing all reasonable efforts have been made to consult, the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba has the right to modify the terms of this award if, because of changed conditions, it becomes necessary to do so.
