Claiming Your   Userid and Computer Account

You can use any microcomputer or Unix workstation in any of the above Academic Computing Labs or you can dial-in from your home computer.

Regardless of how you access the claimid procedure, please note the following:

  1. When asked to select a system, choose ccu.
  2. Read the usage agreement carefully.
  3. If you are reclaiming your account, your previous userid and password will be enabled.

Remember to quit the claimid application when you are finished.

The claimid procedure may be activated as early as two weeks before classes, provided your fee payment is fully processed. If you run claimid during the day, your account will normally be ready for Internet and E-mail use within two hours.

From the Web:
Go to www.umanitoba.ca/acn/docs/claimid.html. Read the instructions and follow the link to the claimid procedure.

From a Campus Microcomputer:
To run claimid from a microcomputer in one of our computing labs, turn on the computer and monitor, then log into the local area network with the userid provided. Using the left mouse button, double click on the claimid icon on the screen. The follow the instructions on the screen.

From a Unix Workstation:
To run claimid from a Unix workstation, look for a machine labelled "NCD" or "Sun" and a monitor that displays a box labelled "Computer Centre Unix" in the middle of the screen. On each of the "Login:" and "Password:" lines enter claimid in lower case letters and then press the [enter] key. Follow the instructions on the screen.

From Your Home Computer:
We recommend you use claimid on campus rather than from home. You can dial in from home if you are familiar with dial-in procedures and a terminal emulation program such as Hyperterminal (Win95/98/NT), zterm (Macintosh), or Windows Terminal (Win31). Be sure to set the program for VT100 emulation and dial 275-5166. Type claimid at both the Username and Password prompts and follow the instructions.

Dial-in information is available on the Web at: www.umanitoba.ca/acn/remote.

Userid and Password

The claimid procedure will assign you a Unix userid, which is the "user name" or "login name" by which you identify yourself to the system.

At the same time, claimid will assign you a password. Record your userid and password somewhere private.

You must keep this password confidential. If anyone sees your password, change it immediately.

Your E-mail Address

Your student E-mail address is your Unix userid appended with @cc.umanitoba.ca.

For example, if your userid is umsmith, then your E-mail address is umsmith@cc.umanitoba.ca.
