Internet Accounts

As a registered student you are eligible to have a computer account on the central Unix system "CCU" that provides dial-in and on-campus access to the Internet and E-mail.

It is strongly recommended that you obtain a computer account so that the university, your instructors, and your student colleagues can communicate with you via this medium throughout the term.

Your computer account can be claimed after your tuition payment is fully processed. (Note that if you paid your fees through a financial institution, an extra week may be required before processing is complete.)

Claiming your computer account is a do-it-yourself procedure called "claimid' and is described in more detail under Claiming Your Userid.

Your computer account will remain active for the current academic session. You will need to repeat the claimid procedure at the beginning of each new session to reactivate your account.

Your Responsibilities
Your computer account is a privilege that carries responsibilities and you are expected to use your account in accordance with the policies and standards of the University of Manitoba, respecting the rights and privileges of others.

Your Account is For Your Use Only
Your computer account is for your use only. For reasons of computer security and to conserve limited computing resources, no one else is permitted to use your computer account, not even your friends or family members.

Commercial use is also not permitted. You must not send chain mail, pirate software, harass others, "spam" another user or Internet site, or disrupt the functioning of the university computer system or other computer systems. All of the foregoing are violations of university policy and have potential legal implications.

Your computer account may be revoked if it is used irresponsibly. Serious infractions of computer account responsibilities and regulations have led to disciplinary measures and criminal proceedings.

The university's policies on computer accounts is found in Policy 238, Computer Usage, as well as in a document titled Responsible Computer Usage, that was prepared by Academic Computer and Networking. Both are available on the university's Web site, www.umanitoba.ca.
