Continuing Education Division -
Distance Education Program

Section 1: General Information

The Distance Education Program provides learners throughout Manitoba, Canada, and the world with an opportunity to complete university degree credit courses without attending a class at The University of Manitoba campus.

Currently, most students enrolled in distance education courses are under 26 years old, over half are female, many are employed and have previous university experience. Whatever the background, distance education students are highly motivated, committed to establishing a regular study schedule and adhere to deadlines without having to be reminded by an instructor or classmates.

If you work part-time or full-time, are unable to register in one of the on-campus courses because of scheduling conflicts, or have family commitments, the Distance Education Program has a wide variety of courses available.

Courses have been designed to meet the needs of students studying at a distance. They provide:

  • One-on-one interaction with teaching staff using mail, fax, e-mail, or the Canada-wide toll-free telephone service;
  • Either a print-based or net-based course manual designed to replace the classroom experience;
  • Reference materials available through the Distance Education Library Service or by the World Wide Web (Internet);
  • Opportunities for group discussions using audioconferencing (Group-Based Study); using computer newsgroups, chat, and e-mail (Net-Based Study); or in person at rural Manitoba community sites (Campus Manitoba);
  • Submit and return of assignments using mail, fax, or in some cases, the WWW; and
  • Final exams written at a site near where you live.

You purchase textbooks, audio and/or videotapes, and reading material packages separately through the university Book Store (mail service available). You are also required to cover your long distance telephone costs to join an audioconference and provide your own computer and Internet access if you participate on-line.

Access

Do You Have the Equipment Required to Access Distance Education? The technologies required vary depending on the course. In some cases, you will require a VCR and television, an audio tape player, a telephone, and access to mail or fax service. If you wish to use the WWW, you require access to a computer and a modem, software and access to an Internet provider. Specific information is included in the Net-Based program description of the Distance Education Program Guide.
