Faculty of Science

Section 5: UMREG and Your Science Program

Space Availability
Most space in Science and Arts courses except that which is reserved for other faculties and schools is available on UMREG from the beginning of the registration period; i.e., space is not filtered in on a daily basis.

In most cases, reserved space not used by the reserving faculties will be available on Monday, August 14, 2002.

The following checks are performed when you register by telephone.

Major and Honours students: You must obtain departmental approval of your initial registration and deliver this approval to the Science general office before you can access UMREG. If you are entering a program or registering for your graduating registration, you must confirm eligibility with a Science student advisor before registration.

Prerequisites: You are not allowed to register by telephone for any course for which you do not have the exact prerequisite as stated in the Undergraduate Calendar.

Term load: You are allowed to register for a maximum of 15 credit hours per term. Some Honours programs may allow more.

Timetable conflicts: You may not register in any course whose time conflicts with a course in which you have already registered for that session.

Limited Access: Up to August 16, you may not register for any course from which you withdrew after the normal registration revision period in the 2001-2002 Regular Session or 2002 Summer Session, or which you previously completed in these sessions.

Repeated courses: Any course in which you have earned a grade of “C” or better cannot be repeated without approval of a Science student advisor. Registration in courses that cannot be held for credit with another course previously taken must be done through the Science general office. Repeated courses are subject to Limited Access.

Space allocation: UMREG will confirm that you have been successfully registered and will assign space for you. It will not allow you to register in a section that is full or unavailable. Listen to the responses to ensure that the transaction is complete.

Courses offered by other faculties and schools acceptable for credit in Science: UMREG will not permit you to register:

  • For more than 36 credit hours of courses from outside the Faculty of Science in your entire Science degree program;
  • For courses that are not available through UMREG; and
  • In courses offered by other faculties and schools that are not acceptable for credit in a Science degree program.

See the list of other faculties' courses acceptable for credit in Science. Students in an Honours program and/or other degree students who wish to register for courses not on this list must see a Science student advisor. Registration in such courses normally requires written permission of the department offering the course prior to registration. Refer to the other faculties’ timetables included in this Guide for registration information.

Laboratory registration: If a course requires registration in both a lecture and an appropriate laboratory section, UMREG will not finalize your registration in that course unless you register for both.

Laboratory exemptions: If you wish to repeat a course for which you have obtained a laboratory exemption, you must register for the laboratory B99 (B98 for 002.130, in first term). Note that currently only the following courses offer a laboratory exemption:

001.246 002.222 002.237 060.277 060.210
002.130 002.228 060.237 002.278 060.211
002.131 002.229 002.238 060.278
002.132 002.236 002.247 002.338
002.221 060.236 002.277 002.339

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are eligible for a laboratory exemption. If you register in B98 or B99 for one of these courses and it is subsequently determined that you are not entitled to exemption, you will be required to register for a laboratory section. If no space remains available in the laboratory, you will be required to withdraw from the course. Information on laboratory exemptions may be obtained in departmental offices.

Students with laboratory exemptions are subject to Limited Access.

Laboratory release: Certain Chemistry and Microbiology courses require that you check out of the laboratory before you withdraw or change lab sections. If you wish to withdraw from the following courses, or change laboratory sections in the following courses after September 15, 2002 for first term and full courses, and January 3, 2003 for second term courses:

002.131 002.236 002.277 002.238
002.221 060.236 060.277
002.222 002.237 002.278
002.247 060.237 060.278

You must check out of the laboratory through the Chemistry laboratory steward. If you withdraw from one of these courses or change sections and fail to have this activity authorized by Chemistry after September 15, 2002 (for first term or full courses) or January 3, 2003 (for second term courses), you will be placed on hold and your records will not be released until you report to the Chemistry department.

5.1 What UMREG Cannot Do
UMREG will not check degree requirements. You are responsible for knowing the requirements of your degree. Consult a Science student advisor for advice and assistance if degree requirements are unclear.

You cannot add or change a course classification through the telephone. Therefore, if you are an undergraduate student and wish to take a course as a Special Student in your degree, as an Auditor or as a Challenge for Credit, you must add this course in person in the Science general office within the normal deadlines for such activity.
