Section 7: Policies
7.1 Maximum Number of Voluntary Withdrawals
There is a limit on the number of voluntary withdrawals that each Science student is permitted. A voluntary withdrawal (VW) is defined as a withdrawal that occurs after the normal deadline for course changes (registration revisions), which is normally the first two weeks of classes in each term. Withdrawals that occur before this date will not be limited. Any withdrawal that occurred prior to September 1993 will also not be included in this maximum.
Science students are limited to a maximum of 30 credit hours of voluntary withdrawals (five full courses or equivalent) in their degree program in Science. Students who are admitted to Science from another faculty or school at the University of Manitoba transfer in those voluntary withdrawals from courses that are acceptable for credit in Science. Students in other faculties are normally permitted a maximum of 30 credit hours of voluntary withdrawals from Science courses.
When the maximum VW limit is reached, students may decrease their VW count by one full course equivalent for each successful 30 credit hours. Also, after a five year absence, the VW count shall be set to zero.
Authorized Withdrawls
Students who have valid and documented reasons for withdrawal, such as medical illness or compassionate circumstances, may be authorized to withdraw without penalty. These Authorized Withdrawals (AW) are not part of the 30 credit hours of voluntary withdrawals. Authorized withdrawal must be approved by the Faculty of Science general office.
7.2 Limited Access Policy
Most university courses (including all Science and Arts courses) are considered Limited Access. Limited Access is described in chapter the Telephone Registration System of this Guide and the Undergraduate Calendar.
