Telephone Registration - UMREG

14. Voluntary Withdrawal (VW) from Courses
When considering whether or not to drop a course, note that not all your fees are refunded, and the actual refundable amount is based on when you withdraw. In addition, courses dropped after the revision period will appear on your academic record as VW. The number of VWs you may accumulate is also limited; the VW limitation is described in your faculty or school chapter.

To withdraw from any course, or an entire program of studies, you must use UMREG if you are eligible to do so.

You do not "drop" or voluntarily withdraw from a course by simply not attending class, or not paying your fees. You must complete the voluntary withdrawal procedures. If you registered through UMREG, then UMREG is also the means by which you "drop" or withdraw.

If you are a student in a program where telephone registration is not used, you must initiate your withdrawal action in person, or in writing, through the general office of your faculty or school.

See the UMREG schedule for further information.

If you are a student with a scholarship, bursary, or student loan, a voluntary withdrawal may affect your eligibility for that financial support. Before withdrawing, consult Financial Aid and Awards, 422 University Centre for information on the impact voluntary withdrawal may have on your financial assistance.

15. Maximum Number of Voluntary Withdrawals
While there is no limit on the number of course changes you make during the registration revision period, there is a limit on the total number of times you may voluntarily withdraw from courses after that time.

In general, the maximum number of voluntary withdrawals you are allowed throughout your program is equal to a full year of study in University 1 or in a faculty or school (for example, in Arts the maximum is five full courses or 30 credit hours).

Consult with an advisor in your faculty or school before reaching your VW limit for additional information.

16. Limited Access Policy
In certain circumstances, you won't be allowed to re-register in a course until a specified date following the initial 21-day access period.

The limited access policy affects you when:

  • You voluntarily withdraw from a course after the last date for course changes;
  • You have had your registration cancelled for non-payment of fees;
  • You had previously audited the course;
  • You receive a grade in the course, regardless of whether the grade is a passing or failing grade.

The UMREG schedule indicates when you may re-register in a course covered by the limited access policy. The restriction remains in effect for two sessions following your first registration in the course.
